On Wednesday, 06 Sept 2023, Bethany will be presenting her work as a guest to the Step Into Tech programme run by the University of York. Students on the programme take part to learn more about careers in the tech industry and have little to no experience prior. Throughout, they learn things like design, coding logic, user interface and data analysis.

Bethany will discuss her route into the tech world, what Experience Heritage does and how different projects utilise these skills.

Learn more about the programme on the University of York website.

York Careers Ready Mentor

by Bethany Watrous

Throughout 2022, I will be mentoring a sixth form student as a volunteer of the Careers Ready Programme in York. As part of this, we will meet once a month and discuss different career options and pathways, what the world of work is like and the different skills they’ll need moving into the workforce. As part of this, we will also work to:

  • Identify their personal strengths and skills for development

  • Present themselves in a professional manner

  • Explore different career paths and how to navigate towards them

  • Gain real experience of the world of work e.g. by visiting you at your office

I look forward to this opportunity to give back. Throughout these first years starting and running my business, I’ve been lucky to be aided by several mentors along the way and this is a way I can pay that forward to the next generation.

I also appreciate the chance to be able to help young students better understand what they might do with their passions. As a young student, I was never quite sure what all my options were and therefore ended up taking quite a windy road getting to where I am now. I look forward to the opportunity to help a young person understand how they might form their passions into a career.
